Instructor Profile: Steve Walden became interested in the hard-style martial arts as a teenager in rural Indiana. At that time, finding an instructor willing to teach a martial art to an individual with a significant visual impairment (Steve is legally blind) was very difficult.

Steve eventually found several instructors who were willing to teach him. He currently holds a number of certificates in the martial arts: 8th degree black belt Isshinryu Karate, 5th degree black belt Tae Kwon Do, 1st degree black belt Judo. He has trained many black belts at a number of martial art schools in Indiana.

Steve is currently part owner of the Augburn-Walden Family Dojo in Terre Haute, IN.

With advancements in visual aids, he was able to return to school and completed the Physical Therapy Assistant Program at the University of Indianapolis. He is currently employed at Terre Haute Regional Hospital in the Outpatient Therapy Program where he began to use the Tai Chi for Arthritis Program in his clinical practice.

He found Tai Chi for Arthritis to be so effective with his patients, that he then became certified in a number of Dr. Lam’s other health adapted forms: Tai Chi for Arthritis (Parts 1 and 2); Tai Chi for Diabetes; Tai Chi for Back Pain; and Tai Chi for Osteoporosis. He has attended several of Dr. Lam’s U.S. workshops to study: Sun 73; Yang 24; Chen 36 and Combined 42.

He has taught the Sun 73 and Yang 24 to students in his martial arts school for 4 years. For the past three years he has also taught Tai Chi in 3 assisted living facilities and through the Maple Center, an integrative health center. Class sizes vary from 10 to 20 students per class. In addition, to the Tai Chi for Health forms, Steve also teaches the seniors a fan form he developed based on Tai Chi for Arthritis form

With over 30 years martial arts experience, he is frequently asked to speak about self-defense and the martial arts. Currently most of his talks have focused on his experiences using the Tai Chi for Arthritis program developed by Dr. Paul Lam. Mr. Walden has worked closely with Dr. Lam and received international recognition for using the Tai Chi program in the clinical setting.
